Raised in New York, Alex’s introduction into fitness started at age 16. He started off using a friend’s simple weight set – a bar with about 70 pounds of weight. It was not until he was in his mid-thirties that he became inspired by having access to a full gym in his New York condo.
A few years after relocating to Charlotte, North Carolina, a friend introduced him to the phenomenal success of industry fitness leader Obi Obadike. It was Obi’s approach to fitness and nutrition that sparked Alex to take his fitness to another level. He wanted to look like Obi and achieve it the same way – through healthy eating and consistent exercise. At age 47, Alex gradually went from being a regular guy with a moderate exercise routine (who was eating his fair share of fried foods, pizza, candy, cookies and cake) to a six-day-a-week “gym rat.” He became known as “Lex” and “that old guy at the gym.”
Lex’s transformation hasn’t come without some personal challenges. At age 51, he had total hip replacement. He used his recovery time to begin the process of reviewing, studying, and eventually earning his personal trainer certification. His desire to help change lives through fitness took off during his rehabilitation process.
Today, in his mid-fifties, Lex’s dream to help as many people become the best version of themselves is coming true. He is targeting people over 40 who have felt challenged about getting fit. He prides himself on pushing people past their self-imposed limits. His clients have become motivated to become better versions of themselves as they get older.
MATTEEL KNOWLES, PhD
Transformation Coach, AIR³ Co-founder
A 20-year veteran in higher education, Dr. Matteel D. Knowles currently serves as the Vice President for Student Services at Greenville Technical College located in Greenville, South Carolina; prior to that at the Technical College of the Lowcountry in Beaufort, South Carolina as the Vice President for Student Affairs; and prior to that, at Piedmont Technical College in various roles in Student Development from 1997 until 2007.
Born and raised in Philadelphia, her family relocated to Jacksonville, Florida in the late 1970’s. The first in her family to earn a college degree, Dr. Knowles first earned an Associate of Arts degree from Piedmont Technical College in Greenwood, South Carolina. She then went on to earn a Bachelors in Counseling and Human Services from Limestone College in Gaffney, South Carolina; a Masters in Career and Technology Education from Clemson University; a Graduate Certificate in Higher Education Leadership from the University of South Carolina; and a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration from the University of South Carolina.
Prior to serving in executive-level leadership roles, Dr. Knowles served for approximately 13 years in administrative support positions – supporting executives in mortgage banking, universities, law firms, sporting goods, and manufacturing engineers; and eventually transitioned into higher education.
Very active in the community, Dr. Knowles has served on the following boards: Arts Council of Greenwood, Meg’s House women’s shelter, the Bluffton Boys and Girls Club, the Rotary Club of Greenville Evening, the United Way of Greenville County, the Hispanic Alliance, and the Urban League of the Upstate. Other service has included active participation in Greenville Women Giving, Education First, Incorporated, Redemption Church, and the National Coalition Building Institute.
An active public speaker and workshop presenter, Dr. Knowles was featured in 2016 among a select group of TED speakers for TEDx Greenville’s annual conference. She has served as a keynote speaker in various settings and has presented numerous professional and community workshops on a variety of topics designed to inform and inspire those who desire to transform their lives.
An overcomer, Dr. Knowles’ intense desire to support others through positive change and authentic transformation is directly related to some of her own personal life transformations – surfacing and thriving on the other side of divorce, morbid obesity, first-generation education, and a lack of purpose, she now fully embraces a lifestyle that is grounded in choices that are mentally, physically and spiritually healthy and devotes much of her free time to personally coaching others through their own life makeovers.
HOW AIR³ HAS TRANSFORMED MY LIFE
“I came to Matteel when my life was falling apart. I was not sure how to begin putting one foot in front of the other to be able to begin moving forward again and I was not in a position to be able to speak to friends or family about my situation. Matteel spoke to me on a human level that resonated with my spiritual nature. Her advice and instructions gave me the confidence to start a new path, and that has made all the difference.”
